How to Change a
YouTube Thumbnail

Open YouTube Studio โ†’ Content, click the video, upload a new image under the Thumbnail heading, and hit Save. Below: the same steps on mobile, what to do when the option isn't there, and why changing thumbnails on old videos is safer than most creators think.

Change a thumbnail on desktop

  1. Open YouTube Studio

Sign in to YouTube, click your profile picture in the top right, and choose YouTube Studio.

  2. Go to Content and pick the video

Select Content in the left sidebar. Click the title or thumbnail of the video you want to change โ€” this opens its Details page.

  3. Upload the new image

Scroll to the Thumbnail section under the video preview. Choose Upload file and pick your image. It needs to be 1280ร—720, 16:9, and under 2MB โ€” see the size guide if you're unsure.

  4. Save

Click Save in the top right. Nothing applies until you do โ€” this is the step people miss.

Don't have an image ready?

The AI thumbnail maker generates a 1280ร—720 thumbnail from a description of your video, already sized and compressed to YouTube's requirements. You can also paste the video's URL and let it design from the video itself.

Change a thumbnail on mobile

The YouTube app can do this, though the flow is more limited than desktop and the exact wording shifts between app versions:

  1. Open Your videos

Tap your profile picture, then Your videos (some versions route this through a Manage videos option).

  2. Edit the video

Tap the video, then the pencil or Edit icon.

  3. Tap the thumbnail

Tap the thumbnail image at the top. Choose a custom image from your camera roll, or pick one of the auto-generated frames.

  4. Save

Confirm with Save or the checkmark in the corner.

If you're changing several thumbnails, do it on desktop. Mobile hides some options and makes it much harder to check how the image reads at small sizes.

When the thumbnail option isn't there

No "Upload file" button at all

Custom thumbnails require a phone-verified channel. In YouTube Studio go to Settings โ†’ Channel โ†’ Feature eligibility and complete phone verification. The option appears as soon as verification succeeds โ€” no waiting period.

The upload is rejected

Almost always the 2MB file size limit, and PNG exports blow past it constantly. Run the image through the thumbnail compressor to get it under the ceiling without visible quality loss, then retry.

It saved, but the old thumbnail is still showing

That's caching rather than a failed change. Check the video in a private window โ€” if the new image is there, the change worked and the rest will catch up. The full troubleshooting guide walks through every cause.

Your channel has strikes or restrictions

Community Guidelines strikes can suspend custom thumbnail privileges, and a thumbnail removed for violating policy will block re-upload of anything similar. Check for notices in Studio.

Does changing a thumbnail hurt the video?

No. This worry stops a lot of creators from fixing thumbnails that are actively costing them views. Changing a thumbnail does not reset views, watch time, comments, or search ranking. Nothing is republished and the video is not re-reviewed. YouTube keeps the entire performance history and starts measuring click-through rate against the new image from that point on.

The genuine risk is much smaller and worth naming: if a video is currently being pushed hard by the recommendation system, a worse thumbnail will cut its click-through rate and the system will slow it down. That's not a penalty for changing โ€” it's the algorithm responding to the new image exactly as it responded to the old one. If a video is in an active spike, leave it alone until it settles.

Which old videos are worth revisiting

Back-catalogue thumbnails are usually the cheapest views available to a channel, because the videos already have watch-time history behind them. In YouTube Studio, sort Analytics by impressions and look for:

  • High impressions, low CTR. YouTube is showing the video and people are choosing something else. This is a thumbnail problem, and it's the most fixable one there is.
  • Good watch time, few impressions. The video satisfies the people who find it. A stronger thumbnail gives YouTube a reason to show it more.
  • Anything from before your style settled. Early videos usually carry your weakest thumbnails and still appear in search.
Change one at a time

Swap a single thumbnail, wait two weeks, and compare CTR in Studio against the previous period. Changing ten at once tells you your channel improved but not which change did it โ€” so you learn nothing you can repeat.

If your channel has access to Test & Compare in YouTube Studio, use it. It rotates up to three thumbnails on the same video and reports which earned the most watch time, which is a far better signal than a before-and-after comparison across different weeks.

Changing YouTube thumbnails โ€” FAQ

Does changing a YouTube thumbnail reset the video's views or ranking?
No. Views, watch time, comments, and search ranking are unaffected. YouTube keeps all existing performance history and simply begins measuring click-through rate against the new image.
Why can't I change my YouTube thumbnail?
Custom thumbnails require a phone-verified channel โ€” go to Settings โ†’ Channel โ†’ Feature eligibility in YouTube Studio. If you're already verified, the file is probably over the 2MB limit or in an unsupported format.
How long does it take for a new thumbnail to update?
Instantly in YouTube Studio, and across YouTube within a few minutes. Old thumbnails can linger for hours in browser caches, on social platforms that cached the preview, and in the mobile app until it refreshes.
Can I change a YouTube thumbnail on my phone?
Yes โ€” in the YouTube app open Your videos, tap the video, tap Edit, then tap the thumbnail to replace it. Custom thumbnail upload on mobile still requires a phone-verified channel.
Should I change thumbnails on old videos?
Often yes. Older videos already carry watch-time history, so improving a weak thumbnail on a video YouTube still occasionally recommends is usually the fastest way to recover views. Change one at a time so you can attribute the result.
Can I change the thumbnail on a YouTube Short?
Support for custom Shorts thumbnails is limited and varies by account and app version โ€” YouTube generally selects a frame from the video itself. The reliable custom-thumbnail workflow on this page applies to standard videos.
